Armm braces for polls

THE Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) is all set for the coming May elections.

This as they prepare for the expected election-related violence that might happen in their area like in the past elections.

Armm Governor Zaldy Ampatuan said he already tapped all sectors in all levels from the provinces down to the barangays to ensure that proper coordination is made to prevent violence from occurring during election.

"We already have networking from the provinces down to the barangay level and we are continually strengthening our coordination," Ampatuan recently said.

However, the governor admitted that they could still not expect a 100 percent violence-free election this May as intense political rivalries and presence of lawless elements still abound in their area.

"But here in Maguindanao, we already came up with a solution to avoid political rivalry by creating more municipalities to give everyone an area," Ampatuan said.

He though could not assure the same in other areas of the Armm.

Ampatuan was invited by the commanders of the military's Eastern and Western Mindanao commands during their command conference here in Davao City Thursday last week.

The Armm has the most number of election hotspots as identified by the Commission on Elections.

Nationwide, the police and military have initially identified 10 provinces as election areas of immediate concern. Eleven provinces were also considered as election areas of concern.

At the city and municipal level, 21 were categorized as election areas of immediate concern with another 537 considered as election areas of concern. (BOT)
