Thursday, January 25, 2007 Carpio inhibits from Dureza son's case By Rhodamae M. Hernandez
A REGIONAL Trial Court Judge inhibited himself from handling the case of the son of the presidential adviser for peace Jesus G. Dureza and the young Dureza's companions who were involved in a free-for-all a decade ago.
The reason: Some quarters are meddling in the case.
Judge Emmanuel Carpio refused to try the case of Jesus Dureza Jr., Jose Enrique Laurel, Jose Enrique Laurel III, Peter Montojo, Clint Salutillo and 17 John Does charged with two counts of attempted murder for mauling one Jose Brian Bañez, who at that time was 22, outside Philippine Women's College in Matina on November 25, 1996.
Carpio in his order said the case will be set for reraffling after hinting at some pressures being exerted on him.
"Di ako magsasabi pero they wanted the case to be decided that way or this way," Carpio said. "Pipapangunahan ako on the decision of the said case so I inhibit further trying of the case."
Carpio is the third judge to handle the case. First was Judge Isaac Robillo then Judge Marivic Daray.
