STELLA Maris Academy of Davao (Smad) bet Recto Sanchez earned a total of 4.5 points to emerge champion in the just-concluded 15th BKCC-DCSC U-14 Active Club Rating Chess Tournament at the Blue Knight Chess Club in 86-1 Bonifacio St.
Sanchez recovered from a losing position and forced a draw with Nikki Erica Yngayo of Doņa Carmen National High School of Toril in the final fifth round of the Swiss System format chessfest.
Yngayo dropped to fourth place with 3.5 points while schoolmate Neptali Batucan got the runner-up honors with four points.
Batucan's younger brother, John Ray, of Don Juan Elementary School finished third in the tournament organized by BKCC and Davao City Sports Council.
John Gerard Acedo of Jose Maria College, Smad's Eric Jan Ruelo, Magsaysay Elementary School's Austin Jacob Literatus, JMC's Rowelyn Acedo, Sped-Bangkal's Cloyd John Oria and Magallanes Elementary School's Denzyl John Amar landed at fifth to 10th places, respectively.
Close to 20 players joined the event.
The 16th edition is set on February 10 at the same venue.
Interested participants may start signing up with a minimal fee of P25. Cash prizes and chess magazines will be up for grabs in the monthly tournament geared at developing chess in the grassroots level.
