Lumads beat Koreans for football crown

VETERAN-laden Lumads Football Club beat Team Korea, 4-1, to capture the DFA Cup second division title at the Tionko field over the weekend.

Lawyer Francisco "Iko" Villano knocked in goals in the seventh and 68th minutes while Rene Valdesco and Malaysian Mohammad Said added one goal each.

Gu Ja Sung secured a goal in the 63rd minute for the Koreans' lone goal in the finals of the Davao Football Association (DFA)-organized meet.

"The scoring seemed lopsided but both teams made many attempts at the goal only to hit the goal post or are in `one-on-one' situation," DFA secretary-general Erwin Protacio said.

He said the Koreans squandered several goal scoring opportunities.

"Lumad goal keeper Nonoy Garfin, however, was able to parry off these attempts. Herson Salmon's defensive plays frustrated several Korean break-ways as he simply kicked the ball away from the aggressive Korean attack," Protacio noted.

The Lumad goals were scored inside the penalty area on breakaways or 1-2 passes.

Jay Tolero, Rafael "Pops" Vilela, Danny Adolfo, David Peñano, Hershy Salmon, Anging Sabate, Ruben Sahid, Badoy Deypalubos, Merlo Albano, Krishna Hernandez, Indonesians Didicase and Edgar and British Wayne also played for the Lumads.

Team Korea was bannered by HC Sang, JS Lee, GH Ko, YT Choi, KS Kim, YH Choi, GH Choi, KJ Kim, SS Kim, SJ Lee, JS gu, WS Ha, SM Kim, SY Kim, JC Jung, DU Kim, So Kim, and JG Park. (MLSA)
