Saturday, February 03, 2007 Sara to run for vice mayor, downplays political dynasty issue
LAWYER Sara Z. Duterte laughed off insinuations her family is trying to create a political dynasty when she accepted her father's offer to be his running mate in this coming May elections.
Sara finally announced early this week she is "ready to run for vice mayor," and be Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte's running mate.
She said she does not believe that a political dynasty can exist in a democratic country, such as the Philippines.
"The word dynasty connotes something forced, something that is mandated by an authority, which do not allow room for refusal," Sara said.
She said this is not the case in a democracy, wherein people are mandated to choose their leaders through an election process.
"We have an election process wherein voters can safely and freely say no to a candidate. When you are given a choice, that is definitely not a dynasty," Sara explained.
She said Filipinos do not live in dictatorial ancient China where dynasties are prevalent.
"This is 21st century progressive Philippines," she said.
Preparing for her candidacy, Sara said she is going around city barangays holding consultations with local leaders.
"I consult barangay leaders if my candidacy is viable or not. Hopefully, I would get a positive response," Sara said. (GLP)
