Barte-Suzuki ousts rivals in doubles in Bangladesh Netfest By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
DAVAO City's Ralph Kevin Barte and Japanese Toshiya Suzuki came back strong from a first set loss to beat the Pen-Wang tandem of Chinese Taipei, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, in the second round of the boys doubles match in the Rajshahi International Junior Tennis Championships 2007 at the Zafar Iman Tennis Complex in Bangladesh Saturday.
Second-seed Barte-Suzuki, who drew a bye in the first round, will take on Gangadharan-Verma of India in the quarterfinals of the Grade 3 International Tennis Federation (ITF)-recognized event.
Gangadharan-Verma entered the quarters after pulling off a 6-4, 7-5 win over Canada's Rishi Rajpal and India's Abhijeet Tiwari.
But Barte was set to clash against Suzuki in the third round of the singles competition. The seventh-seed Dabawenyo earlier demolished Indian Tilwari Palash, 6-4, 6-3, while ninth-seed Suzuki crushed Bangladesh netter Itrat Hamid, 6-1, 6-0.
In other doubles matches, No. 1 Damian Hume-Dean O'BRIEN of Russia came from behind to eliminate Chinese Taipei's I-Ta Chen and Karanuday Singh, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 while No. 6
Appanervanda-Sitaram of India overcame Russian pair Krouchev-Viera, 6-4, 6-3.
No. 3 Chumpet-Pakpoomkamol of Thailand whipped Sangwan-Thirani of India, 6-1, 6-4 while Chan-Kovalyov downed Kuschke-Wolfson, 6-3, 6-4 and Chen-Lu of Chinese Taipeos scored a rousing 6-1, 6-3 win over Singh-Tiwari of India.
With his double title at the BKSP International Juniors Championships recently, Barte is eyeing another title in the ongoing Rajshahi meet and in the Bangladesh International Juniors Championships set February 7 to 12 at the National Tennis Complex, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Barte started playing tennis at the Davao Capitol Tennis Courts with initiative from Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) regional vice-president for Mindanao Juanito Cansino Jr.
