Bfar: Damaged seaweed farms to be rehabilitated
THE new seaweed farms in Davao Region damaged by continuous downpour will undergo rehabilitation, according to the regional director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (Bfar).
"Kaya ng farmers i-rehabilitate ang farms, the Bfar will just give technical assistance to them," Bfar Regional Director George Campeon said, adding that these farms have potential to survive even if almost 50 percent were damaged by continuous heavy rains in November and December.
"Kailangan lang ng propagules, babangon na yun," Campeon said.
In the last quarter of 2006, Bfar has established seaweed farms in 15 barangays in at least seven municipalities in Davao Region, namely: Pantukan, Banay-banay, Lupon, San Isidro, Gov. Generoso, Malita, and Island Garden City of Samal.
Erlinda Ali, officer-in-charge of Bfar's Extension Division, said the agency spent not less than P100,000 for each municipality for this project.
"We established seaweed farms in the areas kasi itong mga areas na ito ang wala pang seaweed farms, ang nangyari test plant pa lang. The establishment of the farms will also benefit the farmers because it is an alternative activity instead of fishing," Ali explained.
She added that a technology demonstration was conducted during the setting up of the seaweed farms in these areas. (JGRS)For more Philippine news, visit Sun.Star Zamboanga.
