By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan

THE Philippine Sports Commission will donate P500,000 as seed money to the Davao City Sports Commission when the City Council finally approves its creation through an ordinance.

Ramirez, speaking at the induction of new set of officers of the Sunday Bowlers Club Wednesday night, said that "as a Dabawenyo, I'm compelled to help my fellow Dabawenyos considering that the Davao City Sports Commission is my brainchild."

Ramirez said he appreciates Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte for supporting the creation of the DCSC, which will be patterned after the Cebu City Sports Commission, now doing wonders for the sports community in the Queen City of the South.

Davao City Councilor Peter Laviña said in a separate interview that he is happy to have conducted the first public hearing on creation of the commission.

"It is going to be a mutli-sectoral body of all sports stakeholders in Davao," Laviña said.

The DCSC, according to Laviña, will help the PSC discover potential Olympic medalists.

"It may not be in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, who knows we may yet produce a Dabawenyo gold medallist in the London Olympics in 2012," he said.

Laviña added that they will soon invite representatives from the athletes and business sector to attend the second public hearing.

He said Mayor Duterte is waiting for the committee report on the DCSC by the Committee on Sports and Youth Development headed by SK Councilor April Marie Dayap.

He said the DCSC will be composed of 20 members, adding "we will have Mayor Duterte as the honorary chairman and Chairman Ramirez as honorary co-chair."

"Any of the 20 members can be elected as chairman but we will also elect in charge for local, national and international competitions," Laviña said.

He said they are hoping that DCSC will be created soon before the May elections.
