Investor confidence tops Arroyo's priorities: Dureza

WINNING investor confidence in the Philippines is the immense concern of the Arroyo administration, amid the prevailing perception among local and foreign businessmen on government "inefficacy" in dealing with the country's economic problems.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is determined to make Mindanao a global model for peace building based on economic development, interfaith dialogue and international cooperation, said Presidential Peace negotiator Jesus Dureza as he told Mindanaoans the importance of cooperation of everyone including political foes to solve the problems confronting the ongoing peace talks.

The President is leading the country's reconciliation and restoration of civility, decency and sobriety and is committed to sustainable economic growth anchored on the twin principles of a working democracy with a strong system of check and balances, and a fair and free market economy based on global realities, said Dureza.

Other priority programs of action of the Arroyo administration calls for the creation of more jobs and adequate incomes; improvement in the provinces of food and shelter, basic services and utilities such as water, power, telecommunications and transportation.

Acceleration and intensification of critical infrastructure programs through private sector participation; and significant improvement in the peace and order situation such as the containment of kidnapping and drug syndicates; restoration of strong, credible, participatory, and credible leadership that is free from any smear of graft and corruption and political patronage.

Dureza said the major challenge of the government now is the continuing high incidence of poverty and the widening gap between the rich and the poor. The President has put in place programs to eradicate poverty, he said.
