Dabawenya launches new book on Saturday

THE Davao Writers Guild announces the launching of Tubao Book Series 2007.

"The House on Calle Seminario & Other Stories" is a collection of short fiction and personal essays written by Dabawenya Josie Carballo-Tejada.

This volume includes stories that have been previously anthologized.

"Calle" first appeared in the literary anthology Mindanao Harvest I, published by New Day in 1995. This was the story that qualified the author to a fellowship in the Dumaguete National Writers Workshop in 1994.

Of the story, the late Dr. Edilberto K. Tiempo of Silliman University and chief workshop panelist noted: "With a story material like this, a writer could have the big temptation to let go. But the author of 'The House' has complete control: there is a deep sentiment without a hint of bathos."

Perhaps, Josie's most notable story is "Lunch With Victoria", which appeared in the Philippine Panorama in 1995 and eventually won 3rd prize in the short fiction competition. "Lunch" was her entry to the 2nd Iligan National Writers Workshop in 1995 where she was a Fellow for short fiction.

The story also appears in Dreamers of the Loom, where Dr. Jaime An-Lim comments: "Despite the heavy melodramatic potential of the material, the author managed to avoid sentimentality through a discreet dose of wit, humor and self-depreciation. The result is a very moving story made all the more powerful because of its emotional restraint."

Josie is a 1971 graduate of the University of Mindanao and an Institutional Awardee for Creative Writing. She has recently retired from employment and is now a full time housewife.

"The House on Calle & Other Stories" will be launched on Saturday, 3 p.m., at the Emma Noreen Hall of Brokenshire Resource Center.

Copies of the book may be obtained from the Davao Writers Guild. For inquiries, please text 0920-921-2996.
