Duterte wants Ibuyan to seek council seat By Ben O. Tesiorna
MANY politicians have sought for his blessing, but seldom does Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte seek out a person and convince him or her to run for an elective position.
In his regular television program "Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa" Sunday, the mayor publicly urged Bankerohan barangay chief Edgar Ibuyan to consider running for councilor in May election.
"Panagsa ra ko mudayeg sa usa ka tao in public. Pero bilib gud ko aning kay Kapitan Ibuyan (I rarely praise a person in public, but I really believe in Captain Ibuyan). Kaya I'm asking you to run for council and, if ready ka, ready pud ko mu-endorse nimo sa partido (I am ready to endorse you to the party)," Duterte said.
"It's about time na usa ka pobre, usa ka tawong naningkamot ug maayo atong ibutang (that we put in the council somebody from poor beginnings who worked his way up)," he added.
In a text message, Ibuyan expressed gratitude to the mayor but said that he will still think about it.
"I'm very happy with the endorsement. I am surprised. I will inform you soon," Ibuyan said.
On the other hand, Duterte assured House majority leader and secretary general of Lakas-CMD Representative Prospero Nograles that he will live up to their earlier agreement for Nograles to handle the national slate while Duterte will handle the local slate.
The mayor revealed that though he loathes some of the senatoriables included in the administration's unity ticket, he will, nonetheless, give his all out support to them.
Duterte did not name the candidates though but hinted that they were once with the opposition.
"Ang kadaut ani, kini ang mga tawong miingon sa una kay President to step down, tapos karon mudagan sila sa administration ticket. Walay prinsipyo ning mga tawhana oy. Murag wiper, pabalhin-balhin (What's wrong here is that these are the same people who were telling the President to step down. Now they are running in the administration ticket. These people have no principles, they're like car wipers)," Duterte said.
The local slate is still being drafted, but Duterte assured those he already endorsed earlier that they will be included in the list no matter what.
Duterte's assurance came after reports that Vice Mayor Louie Bonguyan's son, Louie John, might be dropped from the Hugpong slate.
