'Araw' slugfest at Almendras

THE "Sinumbagay sa Araw ng Dabaw," a 52-rounds of boxing event, will be held on March 10, Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at the Almendras gym.

"This will be presented by the Love the Children Foundation Inc., which takes care of the abused and abandoned children in Davao City," said boxing promoter Engineer Geronimo Palermo of the Paca Sports Promotion.

It is supported by the Mindanao Professional Boxing Association (Minproba) and sanctioned by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB).

Also backing it up is the City Sports Development Division Office under sports coordinator Christopher Lawrence "Bong" Go.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Filipino boxing idol Manny Pacquiao have been invited to award the trophies to the winners of the two 10-rounders.

Pitted in the top main event are the sensational Jessie Albarracin of the Tony Dacer Stable from Davao City and bell-to-bell fighter Rey Megriño of the Gemmel Contayoso Stable from Kidapawan City.

In the main supporting bout are former Philippine champion and current Minproba flyweight king Flash Villacura of the Alejandro Acojedo Stable and arch-rival Jerry Manganip of the Bernard Yu Stable-Butuan City.

It will be the third encounter of the two warriors. Villacura lost to Manganip by a technical knockout in their first meeting two years ago.
But Villacura got even with a knockout victory in their rematch.

"We will also feature the other most promising and exciting young boxers today here in Mindanao who can be the next Manny Pacquiao," said Palermo, also a former pro boxer-turned successful geodetic engineer.
