Apo golfers out to rekindle fire By Charles Raymond A. Maxey
WHEN the 60th Philippine Airlines (PAL) Interclub tees off in Cagayan de Oro City from Feb. 21-24, one competing golf club from Davao City is out to regain lost glory and rekindle the fiery form it once showcased in the country's acknowledged national team championship.
Apo Golf and Country Club, back-to-back winners in the 2001 and 2002 editions of the Interclub in the Sportswriters Division, hope to do just that when the Men's Regular play unfolds in the Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club in Cagayan de Oro and Del Monte Golf and Country Club in the nearby Manolo, Fortich, Bukidnon.
With team captain Lando Cachuela leading the charge, the Apo line-up includes Billy Parilla, Benjie Leparto, Jun Horfilla, Ting Castillo, Jimmy Larrabaster, Edie Herrera, Alimar Etrone, Cho Leonor and Soc Cadayona.
Parilla, who was the skipper of the squad in the 2005 edition in Bacolod City, said he will play in the final two rounds along with Larrabaster, Castillo, Cadayona and Etrone.
Opening up for Apo will be Cachuela, Leparto, Horfilla and Herrera.
Apo has not won in the Interclub since 2002 and Parilla said they will try their best to come out big winners again and regain lost glory.
Meanwhile, the Davao City Matina Golf Club is also sending a team to the annual tournament.
Playing for Matina in the Seniors Division will be Antonio Tan, who is the team captain, Marianing Fernandez, Silvestre Bello III, Jose Hernandez, Navarro Eustaquio, Roger Costes, Nick Olarte and Vic Noble.
Club president Jimmy Dureza heads DC Matina's Men's Regular team alsi to be composed of Willy de Leon, Ludwig Ledesma, Boy Manajero, Albert Ancla, Mico Samanodi, Larry Pasquil and Joel Yamyamin.
