Baseball tournament opens at UM-Matina
THE 2nd Davao City Baseball Cup kicks off at 8 a.m. Wednesday, at the University of Mindanao (UM), Matina field.
Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, Japanese Consul Hiroshi Mitsuya, City Division Schools Superintendent Gloria Labor, Datu Uchida Development Foundation president Tatsuo Uchida and sports coordinator Yusuke Uchida and Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School administrator Ines Mallari are expected to grace the opening rites.

The four-day competition sanctioned by the Philippine Amateur Volleyball Association will feature 18 elementary teams and five high school teams.
Entered are A. Loyola Elementary School, Baguio Central Elementary School, Bustamante, C.B. Bangoy, Calinan, Catalunan Grande, Catalunan Pequeno, Crossing Bayabas, Lt. C. Villafuerte Sr., Kibalang, Marilog, Mintal, Mulig, Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai, Quezon, Sta. Ana, Sumimao and Wangan.
The Baguio High School of Agriculture, Bustamante National High School, Crossing Bayabas NHS, Daniel R. Aguinaldo NHS and Holy Cross College of Calinan will compete in the secondary division.
The champion teams will each get a cash prize of P8,000, plaque and big trophy and brand new equipment while the runners-up and third placers will get P4,000 and P2,000, respectively.
The teams will be subsidized with P2,000 each for transportation, lunch during the duration of the games and baseball equipment.
A victory party awaits the winners at the Waterfront Insular Hotel. (MLSA)
