Baguio District is most landslide-prone: mines bureau
By Carlo P. Mallo

BAGUIO District has been tagged by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) as the most landslide-prone area in Davao City.

MGB-Southern Mindanao chief Ed Arreza, citing steep slopes and high moisture content of the area, issued this statement.

Arreza told Sun.Star Davao that the result was revealed in a geo-hazard survey funded by the local government.

MGB is currently doing a geohazard mapping of the entire Southern Mindanao and has recently completed Davao Oriental and the Compostela Valley.

In the two provinces, a number of areas have been already identified as highly and moderately susceptible areas.

The gold rush areas of Diwalwal, Mainit in Nabunturan, and Boringot in Pantukan were tagged as the highly susceptible areas in Compostela Valley.

In Davao Oriental, almost 70 of the 118 barangays were listed as areas susceptible to landslides.

The municipality of Mati has the most barangays identified by the MGB as moderately susceptible areas.

The barangays of Mamali, Iba, and Dawan top the list of the most susceptible areas in the said municipality.

The MGB has already furnished the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council and the local government units a copy of their report. The bureau would also be sending a geologist to areas that were tagged as highly susceptible areas and at the same time is densely populated.

The geologist would assess possible mitigating measures to avert untoward incidents. (With Peng Alino)
