By Charles Raymond A. Maxey

CAGAYAN DE ORO -- Lanang Golf and Country Club of Davao City exploded with 112 points Thursday to make a significant move in the Sportswriters Division halfway through the 60th edition of the Philippine Airlines (PAL) Interclub.

Jun-Jun Grandeza, a former jungolfer, spearheaded Lanang's charge with 30 points at the Del Monte Golf and Country Club in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon.

Davao City Representative Ruy Elias Lopez also had a big round of 29, while Robert Plana and Elvie Naranjo completed scoring for Lanang with their 27 and 26 points, respectively. Tony Fanlo's 21 did not count.

Lanang, which occupied seventh place after shooting just 94 in the first round, now has 206 points.

But the Apo Golf and Country Club had another miserable day with 82 points courtesy of Orlando Cachuela's 23, Edward Herrera's 22, Amado Atillano's 19 and Lucio Horfilla's 18.

Apo, a former winner of the Sportswriters Division, scored 86 points in the first day for a two-day total of 168.

The Rancho Palos Verdes Golf and Country Club, seeing action in the Founders Division, was still playing as off press time. Palos opened with 87 Wednesday.

The top three leaders in the Championship Division are also currently on the course.

Canlubang is the first day leader with 149 points, followed by Manila Southwoods at 138 and Del Monte, which had 137.

Action Asia, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Callaway Golf, 105.1 Crossover, GE Aviation, GECAS, Mizuno, People Asia and Royal Carribbean are the major sponsors in this year's edition of the longest running golf tournament in the country.
