Prices of flowers remain stable amid high demand
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

IT'S graduation season and demand for flowers, especially roses and orchids, is high.

But retail prices of flowers have remained stable in the local markets in Davao City, according to Catalina Hangalay, a flower shop owner in Agdao public market who sells flowers for several years.

"The same with the prices of rose and other flowers, also the price of corsage," Hangalay said in Tuesday's interview, adding that at present, corsage remains at P15, P20, and P25 each, depending on the variety of orchids.

Hangalay said she and other members Agdao Flower Shop Association are expecting a 10 percent increase in sales during the graduation season.

"Base sa experience, a lot of people buy flowers during graduation day, especially when you display them near schools," she said.

It was learned that prices of roses were pegged at P15 each, P25 for two pieces, P40 per dozen, P50 per dozen, and P150 per dozen depending on classes and sizes.

Hangalay added that flower vendors are not only expecting an increase in sales during the graduation season, but also during the Araw ng Dabaw celebration.

"But usually, the prices of flowers don't go up during Araw ng Dabaw; surges are observed during special occasions, like Valentine's Day," she said.
