Councilor pushes for another major Davao festival
By Grace L. Plata

THE City Council committee on tourism proposed the holding of a "Fruit Festival" to bring in more tourists and rack up tourism revenues for Davao City.

According to Councilor Susan Isabel Reta, chair of the committee, the festival was originally proposed by Councilor Jose Louie Villafuerte and was forwarded to the committee to study its viability.

Reta said the fruit festival will be the counterpart of Kadayawan's floral celebration as manifested in the float parade but this will be held in September, the fruit-bearing season in Davao City.

Lectures, exhibits, and fruit farm tours in cooperation with the Barangay Tourism, Arts and Culture Council are to be part of the plans to give visitors a fruit-picking experience, thus promoting Davao’s fruit products attracting possible investors.

Reta said the proposal have been discussed with the Office of the City Agriculturist, City Tourism Office, City Planning and Development Office and the Department of Agriculture Regional Office - all of whom agree that the project is viable.

She said the proposal will be forwarded to the office of the city mayor and she hopes the mayor will give the much-needed endorsement to set the project rolling.
