Lanzones production dropped by 57%

PEOPLE might be wondering why lanzones, one of the seasonal fruits of Davao Region, is rarely seen in the local market.

This is because lanzones production in the region slumped by more than 50 percent as compared to the preceding year's harvest.

In a data obtained from the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS), lanzones production dropped by as much as 57.24 percent.

The biggest downward trend in lanzones production was seen in Davao del Norte with 84.20 percent decrease compared to the total production in 2005.

The province only produced a total of 55.14 metric tons of lanzones compared to 348.88 metric tons in 2005.

Compostela Valley, which posted the highest production in 2005, also dropped its output by as much as 60.10 percent from 4,015.22 metric tons in 2005 to 1,602.17 metric tons in 2006.

Davao City, on the other hand, had a total production of only 567.37 metric tons in 2006, lower by 41.50 percent in 2005, pegged at 969.88 metric tons.

BAS report also showed a decrease in lanzones production in Davao del Sur by 24.84 percent. The province produced a total of 123.77 metric tons in 2005 compared to the 2006 figure of 93.03 metric tons.

Meanwhile, only Davao Oriental posted a positive output in lanzones production. An increase of about 5.37 percent was noted in the commodity's production from 25.68 metric tons in 2005 to 27.06 metric tons last year.
