Sunday, March 25, 2007 Convoy edges Calida for Dutba RRD title By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
BRITISH Thomas Convoy recovered from his first game loss to beat only female finalist Che-Che Calida for the Dutba Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte Tenpin Singles Tournament title at the NCCC Mall B3 Center Friday night.
Calida prevailed over Convoy, 199-194, in the first game but the latter made a strong 231-190 comeback over Calida in the sudden death match.
Convoy bagged the championship cash prize of P10,000 while Calida settled for the P5,000 runner-up prize of the Durian Tenpin Bowlers Association (Dutba)-organized meet.
Third-placer Ver Avelino pocketed P3,000 while fourth-placer Lito Balunan did not go home empty-handed with P2,000.
They earlier played three games to vie for the top four positions in the up-the-ladder stage.
Convoy gained a twice-to-beat advantage after topping the games followed by Che-Che Calida who placed second, Lito Balunan third and Ver Avelino came fourth.
Avelino, however, unseated Balunan in the first knock-out game but he succumbed to Calida in the next round. The latter then grabbed the right to play against Convoy.
Atty. Inday Sara Z. Duterte, the daughter of Mayor Duterte who is reported to run for Vice Mayor, was the guest speaker during the opening rites on March 14.
She said in an interview, "Basketball is not the only sport. There are more events that need government support and attention. I've been going around. I've been to swimming, badminton, duckpin bowling and now here in tenpin bowling. I'm seeing the need of other sports where Davao athletes can excel." (MLSA)
