Chamber won't endorse poll bets
By Carlo P. Mallo

THE Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industries Inc. (DCCCII) will not endorse any political candidate in the coming May elections.

DCCCII president Domingo Duerme said the chamber will remain apolitical.

He also refused to reply when asked if the aerial spray ban will affect the vote of the members of the chamber.

Duerme just said was that the banana sector is but one of the sectors represented in the DCCCI.

"It might probably affect, or it might not," Duerme said.

The DCCCII president also opted to play it safe on the issue of the expanded value added tax (VAT). He said there are both positive and negative aspects to the issue.

He, however, emphasized that the expanded VAT has greatly helped in the strengthening of the peso.

Duerme added that DCCCII might issue a guideline as to what qualifications a candidate must posses.

"The candidate must not only push for the interest of the business sector but also that of the labor force," Duerme said.

He said members of DCCCII think independently of the possible candidates that they would be voting for.
