Davao bowlers first up at B3
By Charles Raymond A. Maxey

TO ACCOMMODATE the growing number of participants, the organizing Davao Tenpin Bowlers Association (Datba) moved the Araw ng Dabaw Tenpin Bowling Classic a day earlier at the B3 lanes of the NCCC Mall.

Datba president Dr. Virgilio Magdale said instead of the March 30 opening, the tournament will fire off on March 29 and will have the Davao players taking the lanes first starting at 6:30 p.m.

Magdale said Archie Perez of the Philippine Bowling Congress (PBC) will act as tournament chairman of the tournament, which will end on April 1 and will arrive Thursday noon to check the machines and the lane conditions.

"Archie Perez will come early to check the machines and the oiling of lanes before the pre-opening games start at 6 p.m. on Thursday," Magdale said.

The opening date was moved a day earlier because available lanes at the B3 center won't be enough to accommodate 80 participants or more in just three playing dates, Magdale explained.

Magdale said 75 players initially signed up for the event, but the number increased to 86 as the playing day got nearer.

"We have 86 confirmed entries as of today. But the turnout of participants may even grow so it would be best to have Dabawenyos star their games since visiting players will all come on Friday," he added.

The visiting players will have their turn at the lanes on Friday, the day PBC executive vice president Jaime Dychauco is to arrive to grace the opening ceremonies.

Organizers expect 15 players from Imus, Cavite, 23 from Cebu City, close to 30 bowlers from Davao City and others from nearby cities in provinces in Mindanao.

Cash prizes and attractive trophies are up for grabs in the competition which also features a youth category. (With a report from Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan)
