Tuesday, April 03, 2007 Peso offers 428 summer jobs By Joy Romares-Sevilla
THE Public Employment Service Office (Peso) is offering a total of 428 jobs in at least 13 companies based in Davao City for students this summer.
Susan Laud, Peso Special Program for Employment of Students (Spes) coordinator, said this, adding that as of last week more than 200 applications were received by the Peso from high school and college students who want to make their summer worthwhile by entering into summer jobs.
"They should visit our office and we will give them a registration form then kami ang magbibigay ng referrals sa mga companies," Laud said.
The companies who were open for summer jobs are the Department of Education (DepEd), Smith Computer School, BF Industries Inc., Makro, Gaisano Mall of Davao, the City Government of Davao, Department of Agriculture (DA), Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC), Grand Men Seng Hotel, Gaisano South Citi Mall, ARB Specialist, Decolrts, and Felcris Department Store.
Laud said among these companies, Gaisano Mall of Davao has the highest number of job offerings with 100, followed by the ARB Specialist with 70, City Government of Davao with 50, and DA with 40.
"Last year at ngayon, pareho lang ang job requirements, hindi tumaas, these were also the firms na nag-offer ng summer jobs last year," Laud said.
Laud added that they are looking for qualified and skilled students who can efficiently do their jobs when referred to these participating companies.
"This is a special program sa mga students na hindi maka-afford na mag-enroll for the next school year, this is actually for poor but deserving students," Laud said.
"For the City Government, pinipili namin yung mga (we select those who are) computer literate,” she said.
Laud said the program is a healthy practice for students since it will expose them to the workplace, thus developing their self-confidence, and train and prepare them for a greater responsibility.
One of the requirements for high school students who wish to get a summer job is a report card, while a college student needs to present his general weight average during the second semester to the Peso.
