Editorial: Political dynasties

THIS particular election year, more than any other before it perhaps, has raised the issue of political dynasty like it were some kind of a demon that must be exorcised from Philippine society. But is it?

It does seem that the May 14 elections has spawned the most number ever of candidates who are related to one another as reported in media, whether such candidates are running for senator, district representative, provincial governor/vice governor, provincial board member, city/municipal mayor or vice mayor, and city/municipal councilor -- from Aparri to Tawi-Tawi.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage

There are any number of reasons why this is so. While it is true that political dynasties are anachronistic to the essence of a truly representative democracy, the fact remains that there is no law prohibiting their existence. Ought there to be a law that will limit people's choices?

Vox populi, vox dei -- the voice of the people is the voice of God, so goes the saying. At the end of the day, it is the people who -- in a clean, honest and peaceful election -- hand down the final verdict as to who will win and lead them until the next election comes along.

The issue for and against political dynasties rests in the hands of the electorate, provided of course that their votes are counted correctly and expeditiously as humanly possible.

In an election that is marred by massive cheating, ballot box snatching, vote-buying, intimidation and killings, the issue of political dynasties is of no moment. Hence, it is imperative that the May 14, 2007 elections be relatively peaceful, orderly and credible.

Given such an ideal scenario, it may be said that the true will of the people has won the day. And that is the very essence of representative democracy. We deserve the kind of government we get, it has been said often enough. That is why we should vote wisely.

That power is in our hands. Sometimes we don't seem to realize it.
