Mountaineers' group faces 3-yr suspension
By Carlo P. Mallo

THE Mindanao Alliance of Mountain Climbers (Malmoc) will face a suspension of three years from climbing the country's highest peak, Mt. Apo.

Malmoc is the mountaineering club that Ian Caasi joined on an initiatory climb of the mountain during the Holy Week.

Department of Tourism-Southern Mindano chief Sonia Garcia said there is a problem with the initiation rights of the organization.

Garcia, during Monday's Kapehan sa Dabaw, said the group does not only need a basic mountaineering course, but also a course on values formation.

She added that part of the basic mountaineering course is that one must be a responsible mountain climber.

The climb brought the untimely demise of Caasi after he drowned in the base camp lake of Venado.

The group had violated one of the tenets of the waiver that they had signed.

It was reported that Caasi died on Maundy Thursday while swimming in the cold waters of Lake Venado.

Various reports on the real incident have been overshadowed by myths and folklore that are believed to have surrounded the death of Caasi.

Meanwhile, Bonifacio Apura, director of the Ecosystems Research and Development Service of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Southern Mindanao, said there are certain do's and dont's when scaling the country's highest peak.
