Tuesday, April 24, 2007 SC chief hailed, dared over anti-terror statement
SUPREME Court (SC) Chief Justice Reynato Puno was hailed, but challenged by a Moro group for his stinging statement against the administration's anti-terror campaign in the country.
In a statement, Moro partylist group Suara Bangsamoro hailed Puno's statement saying that "finally, someone in the SC has the mind and the guts to point a finger against the human rights violations perpetrated by the US-Arroyo's war on terror campaign."
Zaynab Ampatuan, Suara secretary general, made the reaction after Chief Justice Puno made a public denunciation of the US war on terrorism that "scarred the face of human rights in the country."
The Moro leader however said that such denunciation is nothing without corresponding action from the SC.
Ampatuan appealed to Puno that "words must be met with action, especially with the military offensives in Sulu that have displaced 50,000 Moro people."
"Words alone are not enough. The SC has judicial means to deliver justice and put a stop to the militarist intervention of the US government in the country," said Ampatuan.
"It can even do something about the Human Security Act which is the highest violation of the democracy of this country," she added. (BOT/With Press release)
