Saturday, April 28, 2007 Ceasefire with NPA impossible: Dureza
PRESIDENTIAL Adviser Jesus G. Dureza doesn't see the likelihood of a ceasefire between the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the New People's Army (NPA) citing the continuous atrocities committed by the insurgents as the major impediment.
In an interview Friday at the Royal Mandaya Hotel, Dureza said it is also next to impossible for a negotiated ceasefire between the two parties as there are no ongoing negotiations.
"How can we negotiate when there are no talks?" he asked.
The insurgency movement continues to wreak atrocities in key areas in Mindanao as the May polls draw near.
Dureza also downplayed negative travel advisories issued by foreign countries such as Canada, the United States, and Australia on Mindanao.
He said these advisories are internal guidance for their citizens in the country. "It's no big deal," Dureza said.
He added that advisories are just normal.
"They issue advisories but their ambassadors are traveling all over Mindanao," said Dureza. (CPM)
