S. Mindanao has more than 400T MT of palay: BAS

PALAY produced in Davao Region last year was up by 6,325 metric tons compared to the volume produced in 2005, according to the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS).

BAS said the region has an abundant supply of rice last year with a total of 476,411 metric tons of palay compared to the 470,086 metric tons in 2005.

The province of Davao del Sur posted the highest production of palay last year with 143,824 metric tons, of which, 138,754 metric tons was produced from irrigated ricefields, while 5,070 metric tons came from rainfed ricefields.

Davao del Norte comes second with a total of 132,533 metric tons of palay produced last year. The irrigated ricefields in the province produced 128,407 metric tons of palay, while a total of 4,126 metric tons was produced from rain-fed rice fields.

On the other hand, Compostela Valley Province, Davao Oriental, and Davao City produced a total of 107,500 metric tons, 65,425 metric tons, and 27,129 metric tons of palay, respectively.

BAS Provincial Agricultural Statistics Officer William Baranggan earlier said that though there was only over a thousand of hectares of irrigated ricefields left in Davao City, the city still has sufficient supply of rice.

"There is still enough supply to feed the people of Davao City," he said adding that scarcity of rice in Davao Region is not a problem because Davao del Sur produces more than enough of palay.

"Sobra-sobra ang bigas ng Davao del Sur because the population in the area is small," he said. (JGRS)
