Saturday, May 05, 2007 Cida sets aside P2M for watershed project By Joy Romares-Sevilla
THE Canadian International Development Authority (Cida) has extended a total of P2,306,300 million for the implementation of watershed project in Talomo-Lipadas, Davao City.
The project, dubbed as the Community-Based Disaster in Priority Environmentally Critical Areas in Talomo-Lipadas Watershed, was started in September 2006 and will end in September, this year.
The project is a continuing intervention of Cida in various communities within the watershed area.
Cida assisted the establishment of the project since they were also alarmed by the recent natural disasters, triggered by the destruction of environment, happened in many parts of the country where lives had been lost due to landslides and flashfloods.
Cida took the opportunity to make use of the most recent available technical information on the geophysical assessments to reduce the vulnerability of Davao City to disasters.
Several important conclusions as to land use and development in environmentally critical areas have been made, and recommendations for watershed protection have also been presented.
The project seeks to engage in community-based disaster preparedness and management strategy aimed at reducing vulnerabilities of the communities through enhancing the people's capacity to manage these events.
