Saturday, May 05, 2007 'Boom-Boom' out to prove true worth
BOHOLANO boxing sensation Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista is out to prove his true worth when he takes on unbeaten and dangerous Argentinian Sergio Medina in a world-title eliminator Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
A classy boxer whose got power in both hands, Bautista's true worth as a fighter remains in doubt in the absence of quality opponents in the past.
A win over Medina will answer all the questions with regards to his ability and make the doubting Thomases believe in him.
Bautista will entering the ring carrying a record of 22-0 with 17 knockout wins.
His opponent's credentials are equally impressive as Medina totes a 28-0 slate with 16 of his victories not lasting the distance.
For Bautista, a victory here will set him up for a big payday ahead. Waiting for him is WBO super bantamweight champion Juan Ponce de Leon.
But Medina, who is nicknamed "Rocky" is no patsy foe, even looking imposing during the press conference Wednesday.
Bautista's stablemate AJ Banal, meanwhile, will be making his US debut on the same night as he is scheduled to fight Mexico's Juan Antonio Rosas.
The Bautista-Medina and Banal-Rosas bouts are part of the undercard featuring Oscar dela Hoya against Floyd Mayweather Jr. championship clash dubbed "The World Awaits." (CRAM)
