Fida sets up abaca nursery in Toril
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE regional office of the Fiber Industry Development Authority (Fida) established a farmers' abaca nursery in Barangay Catigan, Toril, Davao City.

Fida reported that a total of 1,500 pre-germinated abaca plantlets were transplanted in the nursery, in connection with its thrust to further develop abaca plantations not only in Davao City but also in other provinces in the region through its Goal 1 project, which is the abaca expansion.

Join Sun.Star's online hotline with Comelec spokesman James Jimenez from May 14 (Monday), 6 a.m. to May 15 (Tuesday), 6 a.m. (RP time) and report poll-related incidents in your area.

Fida also attended to a barangay session in Barangay Sibulan, Toril District and coordinated with other agencies to campaign for abaca expansion and livelihood projects.

It also initiated farmers' meeting in the three barangays of the third district of Davao City to intensify the campaign.

Meanwhile, Fida also initiated abaca production training at Sitio Tiombocan, Barangay Marayag in Lupon, Davao Oriental. The activity was primarily focused on the disease identification, prevention, and control.

Fida Regional Director Olympio Macarayan said Davao Oriental has the largest hectarage of abaca plantation in the region, but was quick to add that the area also has the most number of incidents of abaca plantation disease.

Other topics discussed during the training were the production technology, classification and grading of fibers, commodity flow and its uses.

The agency also attended to a one-day orientation briefing in Barangay Simulao, Boston, Davao Oriental wherein the 160-hectare expansion project was primarily discussed under their livelihood program with a P2 million budget.
