Sunday, May 20, 2007 Malanyaon leads clean sweep in Davao Oriental
REPRESENTATIVE Corazon Malanyaon of Davao Oriental's first congressional district was proclaimed Friday dawn as winner in the gubernatorial fight against incumbent Governor Ma. Elena Palma Gil, a second termer.
Malanyaon achieved a first in the province's election history by garnering the largest margin over her opponent and winning in all 11 towns.
The governor-elect got 106,589 votes against Palma Gil's 65,521.
Her teammates in Kampi and Lakas-CMD also routed their opponents.
Three-term congressman Joel Mayo Almario, Malanyaon's candidate for vice-governor, defeated former Mati mayor Edgar Lopez, 104,843-56,906.
In the province's First District, Nelson Dayanghirang won with 39,731 votes over lawyer Pia Palma Gil, the governor's daughter, who got 21,774 votes.
In the Second District, comebacking Thelma Z. Almario, another Malanyaon teammate, defeated Carlos Rabat, 52,547-44,660 to regain her congressional seat.
In the capitol town of Mati, Michele Rabat, daughter of former Davao Oriental governor and incumbent Mati Mayor Francisco "Paking" Rabat, won over former governor Rosalind Lopez with an impressive margin of more than 13,000 votes. Mati is scheduled to have a plebiscite on a bill making the town a city.
Other victories of mayoral bets under the team of Malanyaon are Danilo Nuñez (Cateel), Alice Mori (Caraga), Antero Dayanghirang Jr. (Manay), Sammy Uy (Taragona) Remegio Nazareno (Baganga), Ramy Rosit (Boston), Vicente Orencia (Governor Generoso) and Pedro Mejos (Banaybanay).
The only survivors of Palma Gil's mayoral bets are Apolinar Roylo of San Isidro and Doming Lim of Lupon.
The proclaimed winning board members are: For District 1 -- Bobby Nazareno, Pepot Lara, Nestor Uy, Micmic Oleac and Ma. Consuelo Palma Gil. For District 2 -- Ben Linsag, Lito Macatabog, Tina Yu, Dodo Miones, and Eric Rabat.
Malanyaon and company were proclaimed at dawn Friday by the provincial Board of Canvassers headed by Provincial Election Supervisor Ma. Norina S. Tangaro-Casingal, Provincial Prosecutor Neil Podpod and School Superintendnet Antonio L. Piguerra. (AMA)
