Acedo in Davao rapid chess event at NCCC

NATIONAL 2007 Age-Group Chess Championships girls under-10 champion Rowelyn Acedo of Jose Maria College will try to extend her luck in the Davao Open Rapid Age-Group Chess Championships slated June 12 at the NCCC Mall activity center.

Tournament director Ronnie Tabudlong said Acedo registered early for the competition along with 27 other wood pushers as of Tuesday press time.

Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) bet Mary Israel Palero, a 2006 Shell Chess Championship kiddies grand finalist, is an early favorite in girls under-16 while Dawn Grace Pacaña of B.S. Bangoy Elementary School is also a must-see player in girls under-14.

Pacaña was also a grand finalist in the Shell kiddies event last year.

JMC's John Gerard Acedo, Magallanes Elementary School's Denzyl John Amar, Stella Maris Academy of Davao's Josev Omar Aquino and brother Patrick Miguel, Don Juan dela Cruz ES' John Ray and Neptali Batucan III, San Isidro ES' James Kenny and Junelle Frank Calunia and Quezon ES' Faustine John and Hanzel Palado are also seeing action in the Swiss System format chess fest.

Joining them are James Elisan, Jon Christian Lesaca, Austin Jacob Literatus, Alvin Malabarbas, Meryl Micayabas, Cloyd John Oria, Gary and Jason Rojo, Recto Sanchez, Gabriel Suarez, Romulo Ricardo Suarez, Zsusza Grace Tabudlong, Joshua Tarroza, Ademar Toleran and Dante Ysulat Jr.

Cash prizes, medals, trophies and chess sets will be awarded to the winners.

Registration fee of P35.00 is going on through Tabudlong at (0918) 3590531, Metro Davao Chess Association (MDCA) president Chito Dimakiling Sr. at (0906) 2873391 or MDCA treasurer Romeo Parreño at (0921) 2432226.

The tournament is sponsored by Philippine Sports Commission and Davao City Sports Council, Inc. in cooperation of the Blue Knight Chess Club and MDCA.
