A TOTAL of 1.25-hectare seaweed culture farm has already been set up in the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) during the first quarter of this year, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) reported.
The culture project is one of the thrusts of the BFAR to strengthen the development of seaweed industry in Davao Region.
The project is expected to benefit the Wakaf Community Development Foundation, Inc. located in San Jose, Babak in Igacos.
The completion of the seaweed culture project is one of the assistance given by the bureau to the provinces in the region.
During the first quarter of the year, BFAR, as part of its input assistance, also dispersed a total of 20,000 hito fingerlings to Braulio E. Dujali and in Carmen in Davao del Norte.
It also dispersed 159,070 pieces of tilapia fingerlings to the different municipalities of Compostela Valley province.
BFAR earlier said the agency continues to implement its dispersal activities in order to support the production of tilapia, bangus, and hito in the region.
Meanwhile, BFAR's dispersal activity is one of its strategies to regain the lost production of bangus and tilapia of the region for the first quarter.
The production of bangus and tilapia went down by 3.95 percent and 24.36 percent, respectively due to flood damages in the early period of this year.
