Still no progress in Malita twin slay
By Ben O. Tesiorna

ALMOST a month after the murder of Malita mayoralty candidate Isidro Sarmiento and son Danilo, not much progress was noted on the double murder case filed against Davao del Sur Representative Claude Bautista and his bodyguards who are the principal suspects.

Senior Superintendent Benhur Mongao, chief of Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Southern Mindanao, said the only development so far in the case, after it was filed before the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Digos City, is that the Department of Justice has assigned a special prosecutor for the case.

Other than that, Mongao said, nothing much has developed as they still await the release of the warrants of arrest against Bautista and his co-respondents.

Mongao said at the moment they have continued their monitoring on the whereabouts of Bautista who is said to be in Metro Manila.

He added though that they have no way of confirming this, as they have not seen even the shadow of the Davao del Sur congressman.

Since he is still not considered a fugitive, Bautista is still free to come and go out of the country if he wishes.

The Bautista family however assured the public that the congressman will not escape and that he is merely preparing for the case filed against him.

The Sarmientos were allegedly shot and killed by Bautista and his bodyguards during a heated altercation right in front of the Sarmiento establishment in Malita, Davao del Sur last May 16.

The Bautistas however denied this, saying it was the bodyguards of Claude, and not Claude himself, who shot the Sarmientos and only after the Sarmientos fired the first shot at Claude.

The Sarmientos live near the town's public market and the incident was witnessed by some vendors.
