Rapid chess at NCCC Mall
By Marianne Saberon-Abalayan

INTERESTED participants to the Davao Open Rapid Age Group Chess Championship will have until Saturday to register for the competition set on Sunday at 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the NCCC Mall activity center.

Tournament director Ronnie Tabudlong of the Blue Knight Chess Club said a total of 112 players have signed up as of Thursday morning.

"We expect the turnout of entries to reach 200. We could no longer accommodate more than that number since we will use only 80 tables. Registration fee is only P35," he said during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn Thursday.

The five-round Swiss System format chessfest features the 16-under, 14-under, 13-under and 10-under categories.

"We encourage the players to bring their own chess sets because we only have 50 chess sets available," Tabudlong said.

He said cash prizes, trophies and medals await the top three players in each division.

A good number of Panabo, Calinan and Toril wood-pushers are expected to give top players from Davao City Poblacion proper a stiff challenge.
