Friday, June 22, 2007 Alcantara: Pug Mania! By Joji Alcantara Witerary
THE nicest thing about my job is that it doesn't feel like work at all. I get to visit places I want to feature, people I want to interview, and interesting stories I love to write about, without any pressure at all from anybody. The more unique a story is, the more that I want to share it to the public.
This week we're going to the dogs, literally. The Pug Club of Davao launched a Costume Fun Match in the park of Matina Town Square to foster camaraderie and fellowship among fellow Pug lovers in Davao City.
A Pug is that lovable breed in the movie Men in Black, who looks at you like it is seeing double. Well, to put it bluntly, it is so strange looking that it becomes simply cute and lovable. Believe me, I am a dog lover myself and no dog is ugly to me (and don't you dare say that word to a dog owner!).
So, I chanced upon these Pug owners, proudly holding on to the leashes of their pets dressed in the most outrageous costumes, and vying for prizes in the friendly competition. The tallying was short and the awarding didn't take too long later in the day.
For the non-costume competition, the following won the hearts of the judges: First place went to Pepper (Gene Anthony Angkang, owner), second place was Yo (owned by Arfe/Toto), and Jollibee garnered 3rd place (Chesca Limjuco, owner).
Best in costume went to Rock Star costumed Pogs (owned by Jeffrey Palma), 2nd place went to Koy-Koy in a barong outfit (Miko Libot, owner), and 3rd place went to Ogre dressed in dragon wings (Bagani de Vera, owner). Even the other dogs are so lovable in their crazy get-ups. Sponsors of this event were Petstreet, Holy Kettle Korn, Kodak Victoria Plaza, Davaoexchange.com, and Narra.
We need more stress-relieving fun competitions like these, guys. My basset hound's raring to wear his own costume, too.
