DAVAO CITY'S finest athletes led by jumper Teodoro Nonato Jr. and distance runner Joan Banayag will be honored in a fitting rites when the 13th So Kim Cheng Sports Awards unfold on July 22, 2007, at the Waterfront Insular Hotel.
Nonato was voted this year's best male athlete following his golden performance in the recent BIMP Friendship Games in Makassar, Indonesia, and for capturing two golds in the 2007 National Private School's Athletic Association finals in Iloilo.
Banayag was picked best female athlete after ruling the Milo Marathon twice.
The Ateneo de Davao grade school basketball team will get a special citation for emerging as champion in the Milo national finals in the SBP category.
Atletes from the University of Mindanao are also being honored for giving Davao shining moments during the Prisaa national finals.
Leading the UM honorees are the men's baseball team, the women's basketball team, Prisaa athletics team, the sepak takraw squad and the Prisaa lawn tennis team.
The Davao City boxing team and the Daciba Phoenix bowling squad will also be honored.
Cyclist Felino Cono, meanwhile, will get the Posthumous Awards.
Other sports awardees include Paul Rabe, Engr. Allalen A. Tibus and Jelly Ann Vecino and Glenn Perez in bowling, Philip Ocon and Janice Sinoy in athletics, May Micayabas in chess, Victor Saludar in boxing, Cecil Rule in softball, Kevin Barte and Steffi Dizon in tennis, Jake Barrosa in baseball, Karen Cataluña in basketball, Paulo Juanchon dela Riarte in arnis, Carlo Rodriguez and Anna Celina Gonzalez in swimming, Catherine Kim Mayono and Mark Luthre Anao in badminton, Roy Mercado in sepak takraw and Fernando Pedrosa in bodybuilding.
The Davao City Sports Council Inc. and the So Kim Cheng Foundation organizers are inviting top sports leaders during the affair.
