City to crack whip on criminals
By Grace L. Plata

DAVAO City's campaign against lawless elements shall continue to be relentless and uncompromising, Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte said in his speech Saturday after being sworn into office for his sixth term as local chief executive.

"We shall always put a premium in ensuring that there is peace and security especially in the face of the continuing threats of terrorism. It cannot be overemphasized that criminals and terrorists cannot dictate the way we live," Duterte said.

According to the mayor, the great strides that were attained in bringing about economic development in the city serve as tribute to the independent and pioneering spirit of its people.

"We did not just take the path less traveled, when the situations demanded it, we created our own," Duterte said.

Thus, the mayor sees it fit to continue to strive to make sure peace and security reign in the city.

"It shall be the cornerstone of any and all of our development projects, productive endeavors, and business activities," Duterte said.

The mayor, in a separate speech at the lunch he hosted thereafter at the Grand Men Seng Hotel, asked the police and the military to understand the way he oftentimes have to deal with the rebels especially the NPAs.

Duterte said he has to hold dialogues with these people to attain peace for the city. "There are things I have to do because I have to do it," Duterte said.
