Monday, July 02, 2007 Gonzales KOs Indon By Charles Raymond A. Maxey
GLENN Gonzales, called "Rapidfire" because of his ability to fire punches in bunches, proved he deserved such moniker when he blitzed his way to a sensational first-round technical knockout (TKO) victory over Boydo Simanjuntak of Indonesia before a mammoth crowd Saturday at the North Cotabato Provincial Gym in Amas, Kidapawan City.
Gonzales, one of the very promising fighters under the wings of North Cotabato Vice Governor Manny Piñol, stormed out of his corner with all guns blazing as he stopped Simanjuntak at 2:03 of the first round for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia Pacific interim youth featherweight title.
Simanjuntak never had a chance against the North Cotabato fighter, who landed several wicked left-right combinations to the delight of the hometown crowd.
Edren Dapudong, not to be outdone, also fashioned out a terrific third round TKO over Sakmanee Sitchaeleaw of Thailand in their WBO youth minimumweight showdown, while Glenn Porras outpointed Indonesian Marangin Marbun for the WBO Asia Pacific interim youth bantamweight crown.
Golden belts were awarded to the three winners by WBO vice president for Asia Pacific Leon Panocillo. He was assisted by Rep. Bernardino "Jun" Piñol Jr. and the event's co-promoter Rolando Hiso.
The fight card titled "Triple Trouble" was presented free to the public by the KingMaker Promotions of Soc Piñol. The event also featured the professional debuts of some of the best amateur boxers from the Braveheart Boxing Stable.
The event is also part of the thanksgiving celebration of the Piñol brothers who all won in the May 14 elections, led by Vice Governor Piñol, Representative Piñol, Magpet Mayor Efren Piñol and M'lang Mayor Lito Piñol.
