JOSE Maria College woodpusher Rowelyn Acedo, 11, bested 75 other bets to emerge champion in The Bamboo Store Under-14 Rapid Chess Tournament at the Victoria Plaza over the weekend.
Fourth-seed Acedo, who had a 1764 NCFP rating, made perfect five points after beating Precious International School player Val Paolo Bertulfo in the last and final round of the Swiss System format chessfset.
The diminutive Acedo, a medalist in the 2007 National Age-Group Chess Championships, edged fellow 5.0 scorer Ademar Toleran via tiebreaks.
Sixth-seed Toleran of Sped Bangkal settled for the runner-up honors while third-seed Clark Kent Añabieza of Panabo High School placed third.
Tournament director Ronnie Tabudlong said a total of 76 entries competed in the competition sponsored by Chino Porras of Bamboo Store.
Romy Parreño was deputy arbiter of the one-day chessfest held in coordination with the Davao City Sports Council, Inc. (DCSCI) and Blue Knight Chess Club. (MLSA)
