Supply of Davao's famous fruits to rise in August
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

SUPPLY of durian, mangosteen, lanzones, and pomelo are expected to rise next month, when the harvest season for these major fruit crops in the region starts.

Boy Uy, owner of Angelo Fruit Stand at the Magsaysay Fruit Vendors Association, told Sun.Star Davao that the production of these fruits is not abundant this month, and its prices will be high in the local market.

"Durian now costs P100 per kilo, class A pomelo costs P100, P80 for the class B, lanzones costs P60 per kilo, while mangosteen is pegged at P120 per kilo," Uy said Tuesday.

Uy added that prices of durian will decrease to as low as P25 to P30 per kilogram following its abundant supply during the third quarter of the year.

"There is lack of supply of these fruits, and because of its high prices, sales is also low, but based on our experience since we are here for almost four years, sales will definitely increase starting August until December," Uy said.

Meanwhile, report from the provincial office Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) said that production of durian, lanzones, and mangosteen indeed decreased during the first three months of the year.

Durian's output was only put at 479.13 metric tons, or 12.94 percent lower than the first quarter of 2006.

Lanzones production output also posted an 11.35 percent decrease from 46.94 metric tons to 41.61 metric tons. Mangosteen, BAS report said, also had a negative growth from 13.04 metric tons to 11.37 metric tons, a 12.81 percent decrease was recorded.

BAS, on the other hand, had no production report for pomelo for the period.
