THE City Council approved a resolution on Tuesday declaring Barangay Tamugan in Marilog district in a state of calamity after it was reported that at least 60 families were affected by landslides in the area since last month.
Proposed by Councilor Diosdado Angelo Mahipus, the move is in response to the resolution and letter request of the Barangay Council of Tamugan sent to the Office of the City Mayor, which was forwarded to the council for proper action.
According to the reports of the Tamugan Barangay Council, which was certified by the city agriculturist's office through an ocular inspection, landslides caused by heavy rains during the last month (June 16 to 18) have caused devastation to agricultural crops in the area affecting 60 farmers and their families.
Thus, the Tamugan Barangay Council has requested that their barangay be placed under the state of calamity in order to avail of calamity funds from the barangay budget as well as calamity funds from the city level.
Aside from the approval of Barangay Tamugan's request, the council through a resolution proposed by Councilor Leonardo Avila III has approved the motion to have concerned council committees and concerned agencies investigate the cause of the landslides as well as the damage to the crops.
Avila said it is important to determine the causes of the calamity in order to formulate measures that would prevent this kind of damage in the future.
Tamugan, a hinterland barangay, now has vast plantations of pineapples and bananas.
