Pork prices up by P15 per kilo
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

WHILE consumers have to cope up with the increase in retail prices of chicken, prices of pork per kilogram have also gone up by as much as P15, a meat distributor in Davao City revealed.

The Matina Meatshop, exclusive distributor of Swift chicken and other meat products, reported that prices of pork meat increased because of low supply of hog.

"Another reason is that we also get our stocks from as far as Mati and Tagum. So our retail prices will also depend on how much we got it from these areas," Dominador Budiongan, dicer at the Matina Meatshop, told Sun.Star.

Pork adobo cut now costs P140 per kilogram from P125 per kilogram last month, while pork menudo cut costs P145 per kilogram, higher by P10 from P135 per kilogram in June.

"Significant increase in price was also displayed in pork pierna. We sell it for P138 per kilo compared to P125 per kilo last month, while pork liempo is pegged at P150 per kilo or an increase of P10 from its last month's price," Budiongan said.

But he was quick to add that unlike chicken, customers seldom order pork meat from their store.

"Most of our customers for chicken are restaurant owners and those who are engaged in offering chicken barbeque meals," Budiongan said.

Earlier, chicken prices at the Matina Meatshop reportedly increased from P97 per kilogram in the last monitoring conducted in May, to P100 per kilogram following the demand in retail selling of chicken in the later part of June.

"There is a big demand in the retail selling of dressed chicken that's why the prices increased," Budiongan said.

But while retail prices of chicken increased, Budiongan claimed that wholesale prices of dressed chicken dropped from P92 per kilogram in May to P91 per kilogram at present.
