Health office sets forum on HIV-Aids

THE Davao City Health Office will hold a forum on Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/Aids) on Saturday, in line with the mandate of the Davao City Aids Council (DCAC).

Dr. Josephine Villafuerte, city health officer, said they are alarmed by the high prevalence of sexually-transmitted infections (STI) registered in the city especially since many of those infected are young people, ages 18 to 24.

She said STI prevalence is one of the indicators of the vulnerability factor for HIV/Aids transmission among young people, knowing their display of high-risk sexual behaviors.

It was learned that the city has also registered a total of 22 Aids cases, seven of whom have already died.

The Aids forum is slated at the Azure Room of the Grand Menseng Hotel, 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

Josie Mae Palban Delisle, a graduating BS Molecular Bioscience student at the University of Arizona USA, will be the forum's resource speaker.

The DCAC was created by virtue of a city ordinance passed in 2002 to play vital role in the implementation of programs that would respond to the growing needs of the city to information on the prevalence of HIV/Aids. (BOT)
