Mayor distances self from daughter Sara

THEY have not communicated with each other since their oath-taking last June 30, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte said of his daughter, Vice Mayor Sara Z. Duterte.

"I have not communicated to her personally or officially," the mayor said during the live telecast of "Give Us This Day" program of Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy.

"For reasons of delicadeza, nagdi-distansiya ako. My daughter has to prove herself," he said, insisting that the only reason why he asked Sara to be his runningmate was because she was the only prospect that was sure to beat a political enemy the mayor does not want to share power with.

"Her running for office was really for political expediency or else I will have another vice mayor who will be praying that I will die so he will be the mayor," said Mayor Duterte.

While he did not mention any names, it was apparent that he was referring to his former protégé now regarded as enemy, former City Mayor Benjamin C. de Guzman, who lost his bid in the congressional race in the third district.

In the run-up toward the campaign period earlier this year, De Guzman was showing up in surveys as among the top contenders.

"Sa surveys, wala mang ibang viable candidate except my daughter who was way, way ahead, so I asked her to run," he said. (SAE)
