Saturday, August 04, 2007 Police: Mulcting barker lied about ‘kotong’ cops By Carlo P. Mallo
THE jeepney barker who was arrested for extorting from jeepney drivers was bluffing when he said he had protectors among the policemen assigned at the Mobile Patrol Group of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO).
DCPO Director Jaime Morente on Friday said the investigation he ordered right after extortion suspect Billy Ubay claimed his police connections, showed Ubay was lying as the investigation failed to dig up any involvement of the police.
Ubay was accused of extorting P30 to P40 from every jeepney driver who waits for passengers at Roxas Avenue and telling the drivers that the police will arrest them if they will not pay up, specifying Mobile Police Group vehicle 07.
"We have already informed the mayor of the results of the investigation," Morente said.
He added that he has ordered that the personnel of the Mobile Patrol Group be constantly rotated in order to avoid familiarization.
"They must be rotated for them not to establish relationships with dubious characters in the areas they patrol," Morente said.
