Dad to push zoning law amendment
By Grace L. Plata

CITY Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang is set to propose an ordinance amending the city's Zoning Ordinance in Tuesday’s session. A move, which he said, is long overdue.

"Long time ago, kanunay nako silang gi-remind na (I have often reminded the council members that) we need to adjust it (zoning ordinance) to prevailing conditions especially that we are amending it now and then. The purpose of the ordinance has already been destroyed," Dayanghirang said in a phone interview Monday.

The review and amendment of the zoning ordinance has been called for by various groups including the local business sector.

Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Domingo Duerme earlier said such appeal was contained in a resolution that the chamber has submitted to Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

Duerme said confusion on the zoning ordinance have discouraged local and foreign investors to put up businesses in the city.

"They are apprehensive on the unclear terms of the zoning ordinance especially in investments that cannot be pulled out once it started. They will lose their money," Duerme said.

City Councilor Diosdado Mahipus also said earlier that there is a need to amend the ordinance to fit the needs of the times.

"The existing ordinance does not anticipate long-range development that is why we have to update it," Mahipus said.

The zoning ordinance itself says that it has to be reviewed every five years but Mahipus said it has not been done since 1998.
