Angara, Favila, Yap to attend 6th MFC

SENATOR Edgardo J. Angara, Agriculture Secretary Arthur C. Yap, and Trade Secretary Peter B. Favila will join the 6th Mindanao Food Congress (MFC) slated on August 15-16, 2007, at the Royal Mandaya Hotel, Davao City.

Angara will deliver the keynote speech on Agri-Entrepreneurship as a competitive strategy for Mindanao’s productivity and profitability. The senator authored and implemented during his term as agriculture secretary the Agriculture and Fisheries Modernization Act of 1997 (Afma), wherein farmers and fishermen benefited from improved seeds and plant materials, better irrigation, market access, among others.

The Congress' plenary sessions will commence with Trade Secretary Favila talking about the challenges and promises of establishing a Mindanao Agri-Ecozone focusing on the Congress' thrusts on productivity and profitability of the local farmers, local producers, and the necessary steps in its realization.

Prior to joining DTI, Favila served as a presidential adviser on infrastructure finance and as economic adviser to the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Agriculture Secretary Yap will also discuss during the breakout sessions specific issues and concerns with the different agribusiness sectors in Mindanao, particularly the sectors on vegetable and fruits, livestock and poultry, and aquaculture and fisheries.

With the attendance and support of these key officials, the 6th MFC is expected to strengthen its advocacies and empower the agriculture sectors, enhancing the productivity and profitability in Mindanao.
