MANILA -- The Business Software Alliance (BSA), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting a safe and legal digital world, last week launched “Follow SAM,” an educational campaign, which aims to encourage the adoption of proper software asset management (SAM) among companies.
"The Follow SAM campaign is a call for companies to adopt a model software asset management practice in their organization in order to fully maximize their IT resources and avoid the use of unlicensed software," said Ronald Chua, Chair of the BSA Philippines Committee.
The campaign is endorsed by the Department of Trade & Industry (DTI), Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IP Philippines), Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT).
The campaign is also supported by several key industry associations, including the Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc. (ACPI), Association of Consultant Civil Engineers of the Philippines (ACCEP), Association of Government Internal Auditors (AGIA), Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP), Cebu Software Development Industry Association, Inc. (CebuSoft), Contact Center Association of the Philippines (CCAP), Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines (FINEX), Medical Transcription Industry Association of the Philippines, Inc. (MTIAPI), Philippine Internet Services Organization (PISO), and Philippine Software Industry Association (PSIA).
In a message, DTI Secretary Peter Favila said: “The adoption of a model software asset management practice will allow organizations to get the most out of their software investments and avoid using illegal and unlicensed software.
This will also allow software developers to save time and money which they could use to create innovative new technology, rather than to use their resources in a frustrating task of protecting the software they have already developed.
SAM is a set of policies or procedures within an organization that helps the company to take full advantage of all its software programs.
It involves assessment and audit of software used, setting aside a budget for software procurement and issuing a company policy on the use of software.
A model SAM practice will lead to the maximization of IT resources, and the prevention of the use of illegal software.
Announcements on the upcoming activities on “Follow SAM” will be posted in the BSA Philippines website, www.bsa.org/philippines.
The BSA (www.bsa.org) is the foremost organization dedicated to promoting a safe and legal digital world.
BSA is the voice of the world's commercial software industry and its hardware partners before governments and in the international marketplace.
